LAGOOZ SCHOOLS ACTION PLAN FOR SAFE REOPENING OF SCHOOL AFTER THE COVID-19 SCHOOL CLOSURE

Once it has been declared safe for schools to reopen, Lagooz will implement this action plan to ensure safety of learners, staff and visitors in the school. The guidelines are in line with those recommended by the WHO and NCDC. The school also has an updated Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) stating stakeholders’ roles and responsibilities in line with the safety guidelines for the present situation.

1.        Before resumption, Lagooz will review its existing policy (SOP) and adapt them where necessary to suit the present situation.

2.        Lagooz will have a Back to School plan: This includes the following:

i.          Having an SOP for all stakeholders concerned (learners, teaching staff, non - teaching staff, parents and others). The SOP will outline the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders in Lagooz in line with NCDC health and safety guidelines needed to combat the present situation.

ii.        Adjusting the academic year calendar

iii.       Having a gradual or staggered resumption (e.g. different days for primary and secondary or possibility of morning and afternoon shifts)

3.        The school will provide all necessary safety equipment ( PPE, thermometer, etc.) as contained in Lagooz SOP for the School Authority to ensure safe learning.

4.        The school will have an Education Emergency Plan or Referral System which states the prodedures/protocol for those who suddenly fall ill while in school. Copies of this plan or system (drawn by the school nurse) will be given to both teaching and non-teaching staff.

5.        A school reopening checklist will be used to monitor level of compliance with the safety guidelines for school reopening.

6.        Sensitization seminars (online) will be held with parents, learners and staff to ensure they are all aware of (and understand) the symptoms of COVID-19 and the safety and health guidelines for safe resumption.

 7.       The school will draw out rules for the use of its ICT and hostel facilities.

8.        A school safety and hygiene monitoring team (which includes managers, some teachers, class/health prefects and the school nurse) will be set up to assess compliance/adherence to the safety rules (especially during arrival, break and closing periods) using the safe reopening checklist.

9.        The school will develop a policy on prevention of stigmatization and discrimination for social and mental health protection. This will involve laying emphasis on this during sensitization seminar for reopening and use of charts against stigmatization, among others.

10.      There will be continuous and sustained awareness/enlightenment programs dealing with vital issues such as fear, stigmatization, symptoms of COVID-19, recovery methods, etc.

11.      The school will ensure there is physical distancing, good ventilation and occasional outdoor classes during learning as contained in the SOP for school authority.

12.      Teachers will have revision or remedial classes for learners before commencing proper teaching in order to reduce learning loss. 13. There will be constant maintenance and upgrade of the school facilities/equipment to prepare against sudden outbreaks of similar diseases.
