AN ADDRESS DELIVERED BY CHIEF ‘YOMI OTUBELA fcma, PROPRIETOR, LAGOOZ SCHOOLS DURING INDEPENDENCE/CULTURAL DAY 2018.

Let me warmly welcome you all to this occasion of our cultural day in commemoration of Nigeria’s 58th Independence anniversary. I am sure; you will agree with me that 58 years in a life of a nation is an achievement worthy of celebrations. Why celebrating? Nigeria is a nation blessed with over 300 tribes and as such, for Nigeria to still be in existence as a country today, is a cause for celebration. The title I have decided to give this address is ‘’You are not too young to lead’’ and in emphasizing this aspect, I need to discuss with you  values that you  need instill in yourselves as future leaders to make Nigeria great.

i.      Tolerance: Tolerance is a quality which makes us to accept the different views of other people. Tolerance will enable us to respect other people’s identities, personalities, likes and dislikes. Tolerance will make us avoid tribal wars, religious clashes e.g Hausa Fulani Herdsmen, Boko Haram war etc.  In doing this also, we should learn to stop the use of stereotypic statements to qualify people from other tribes.

ii.      Nationalism: Nationalism is the loyalty. Respect and pride people have for their country.

Iii.     Patriotism: Patriotism is the respect and devotion people have for their country. Patriotism can also be defined as the love people have for their country and are always ready to defend the nation’s interest at all times

iv.     National Consciousness: National Consciousness is reflected through loyalty

v.      Loyalty: Loyalty is the love and respect we have for the nation and we show this by showing support and allegiance to the country through the following ways

   a    Obedience  to the authority

   b    Respect

   c    Willingness to serve

   d    Personal Sacrifice

vi.      Duties and Obligations to Government:  Duties and obligations are the responsibilities expected of individuals in the society to which he or she is morally or legally bound to perform. Kindly note, your rights as citizens can only be enforced if you perform your duties and obligations well. These are some few obligations

a.    Payment of taxes, rates and levies

b.   Proper use of amenities

c.    Orderliness

d.    Respect for symbols

e.    Supporting government programmes

f.    Maintenance of law and order

g.    Participating in national service

h.    Electoral participation for eligible persons

In conclusion, as future leaders, we must be well conscious of all the national values we have discussed above to promote the spirit of national unity in us.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS TO YOU ALL

Thank you and God bless.

Chief Yomi Otubela, fcma

Proprietor,  Lagooz Schools.
