 LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT CELEBRATES LITERACY DAY IN LAGOOZ SCHOOL

Lagos State government celebrated the World Literacy Day in Lagooz School, Orile – Agege.  The programme tagged ‘Lagos State Literacy Day’ started at 9.00am and ended at 12.30pm. The Literacy Day celebration (with the theme: Literacy in the Digital World) in Lagooz was attended by dignitaries from the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) of the Ministry of Education, Lagos State, members of the press and a representative from Teen Trust magazine.

The Deputy Governor who also doubles as commissioner for Education, Lagos State, was represented by Mrs Ronke Soyombo, the Director General of the Office of Education Quality Assurance, the special guest of honour at the occasion.

Some of the dignitaries present from the Ministry of Education, office of Quality Assurance, were: Mrs Ajala, C.B., Director Accreditation; Mrs Durotoye, A.F; Mr Bakare, N.O.; Mr Ojo, S. O. among others.

Chief Yomi Otubela, proprietor of Lagooz Schools, in his speech, addressed the students on the importance of Literacy in our world today. He said that students must cultivate the habit of reading in order to be successful and achieve their goals. The event showcased lots of interesting activities by pupils/students of Lagooz School. The pupils entered the guests with ballet dance, speech on Literacy and Reading Competition in which the pupils read passages from various books with fluent accent. There was also reading of selected articles from Teen Trust magazine written by pupils and teachers of Lagooz School.

Members of Lagooz Reading Club who belonged to various groups (such as Buhari group, Osinbajo group, Bola Tinubu group, Ambode group, Mrs Soyombo group, and Akinbile group) presented copies of books they have been reading.

The Spelling Bee competition featured students of Alpha group against Apex group in the junior and senior secondary categories.

Mrs. Soyombo, in her speech thanked the proprietor of Lagooz Schools for his support and immense contribution towards the Quality Assurance program. She also commended him for putting up a wonderful Literacy Day programme even with a short notice of just two days.

Mrs Soyombo said the pupils and teachers of Lagooz School spoke with fluent accent throughout the programme for a job well-done. She said Readers are Leaders and that the event was all about empowering students through reading and writing. She demonstrated the reading practice by reading a passage from a book on Lagos State with a JSS 1 pupil of Lagooz School, Imisi Oniyelu after which she presented a book gift to the pupil.

Mrs Soyombo also talked about the usefulness of smart phones and i-phones in education (such as downloading books or dictionaries from the Internet) and expressed satisfaction at the successful hosting of the Literacy Day programme.
